Peter Schiefke Announces Candidacy for Speaker of the House of Commons

Peter Schiefke, Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, is running for Speaker of the House of Commons.

If elected, Mr. Schiefke will succeed Anthony Rota, who resigned his post on September 26 in the wake of the tribute paid to a Ukrainian veteran who fought with the Nazis, during the visit of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Peter Schiefke's announcement comes with a promise to defend the interests and concerns of all Canadians, and to restore faith in the Speaker's office and the House of Commons.

"There is no greater honour than to be a candidate for Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons. If elected, I pledge to uphold the values of fairness, impartiality and respect, ensuring that all Members of Parliament have a voice, and that the democratic principles we hold dear are strengthened," says the MP.

Peter Schiefke is "also committed to reinforcing the fundamental principles of democracy and proposing changes to the Speaker's Office policies and regulations to ensure that the events of September 23 are not repeated, as well as modifying or removing policies and regulations that do not reflect the growth and change that Canada has experienced since Confederation 156 years ago," reads a press release. 

"Over the next four days, I look forward to sharing in detail with my colleagues my ideas and plans for the continued development and improvement of the office of Speaker of the House, and to delivering my speech to the House on Tuesday morning, prior to this historic vote," Schiefke concludes.    

 MP Schiefke invites his colleagues and the public to engage in an open dialogue about the future direction of the House and the work of the Speaker of the House of Commons, promising to listen carefully to the needs and aspirations of the diverse communities that form the pillars of Canada.
