Another busy week draws to a close. Here's what's been happening in Vaudreuil-Soulanges over the past few days.

Saint-Lazare teacher Martine Arpin awarded the Ordre de l'excellence en éducation

At an official ceremony held at the National Assembly on May 23, the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, and the Minister of Higher Education, Pascale Déry, decorated the new members of the fifth class of the Ordre de l'excellence en éducation. Martine Arpin was one of them. She teaches at L'Orée-du-Bois elementary school in Saint-Lazare and lives in Coteau-du-Lac.

A memorable 20th edition of the Relay for Life of Vaudreuil-Soulanges

The 20th edition of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Relay for Life, held on Saturday June 8, raised $177,059, demonstrating once again the strength and solidarity of the community in the fight against cancer. This special edition brought together nearly 400 registrants in 43 teams, all united in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Thousands of visitors took part in the 32nd edition of Les Seigneuriales de Vaudreuil-Dorion

The changeable weather that hit the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region this weekend didn't dampen the spirits of the troops involved in organizing the 32nd edition of the Seigneuriales de Vaudreuil-Dorion, held from June 6 to 9 on the grounds of the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Here's a look back at this popular event, which brings to life the days of New France. 

Inauguration of new pumptrack in Saint-Zotique

Yesterday, June 9, the Ville de Saint-Zotique celebrated the official inauguration of its brand-new Pumptrack, built last autumn in the Parc Quatre-Saisons. The event, which took place during the family festival, marked the opening of this long-awaited facility, now accessible to all local youngsters.

A man was shot in Pointe-des-Cascades

A 32-year-old man was shot several times in the street late Monday morning in Pointe-des-Cascades, at the intersection of Chemin du Canal and Rue Centrale.

High school dropout rate on the rise in Vaudreuil-Soulanges

André Gingras was named Bâtisseur de l'année (Builder of the Year) at the CCIVS Gala held on June 6 at the Château de Vaudreuil, attended by 390 guests from a wide range of business sectors.

Just a few days before their graduation ball, students at École secondaire du Chêne-Bleu took part in an alcohol- or drug-impaired accident simulation on Monday morning, a re-enactment that was powerful to say the least. 

Two Gymini athletes win medals in Gatineau

The 20th edition of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Relay for Life, a fund-raising walk for the Canadian Cancer Society, was a great success in terms of participation on Saturday June 8 at Pincourt's Olympic Park, according to Hugo Gendreau. 

Coteau-du-Lac councillor resigns for environmental reasons

District 2 councillor François Vallières tendered his resignation this Tuesday, June 11, in the midst of the municipal council meeting, in the face of deep-seated environmental convictions that are at odds with the current will of Coteau-du-Lac's elected officials. In the minutes leading up to his decision, which he described as irrevocable, the alderman had vehemently opposed a major development project due to be launched on municipal territory in the coming months. 

Two Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot athletes to represent Quebec in Austria

Edouard Burrows-Leclerc and Nathan Bento, two young residents of Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, are off to Austria to represent Quebec at the United World Games, the world's largest junior sporting event.

Yan Lecompte to return to court on September 4

On Wednesday, June 12, 48-year-old Yan Lecompte, a well-known Salaberry-de-Valleyfield man in his forties, returned to the Court of Quebec to answer a slew of sexual charges. Prior to his arrest, the man had been involved with well-established sports organizations in the Suroît region.

Cégep de Valleyfield teacher receives honourable mention

A delegation from Cégep de Valleyfield took part in the 43rd annual colloquium of the Association québécoise de pédagogie collégiale (AQPC) from June 5 to 7, at Cégep de l'Outaouais and Cégep Heritage College.

The CISSS de la Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) is presenting its 2023-2033 Clinical Organizational Plan, designed to provide an overview of the various projects and initiatives in terms of care and services that will be prioritized in the coming years to better meet the growing needs of the population.  

Government announces support and relief for farmers

André Lamontagne, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), was in Soulanges County on Thursday morning to announce over $200 million in support for agricultural businesses.

4,000 bursary awarded to Saint-Lazare swimmer

As part of the 20-year collaboration between the Fondation Aléo and Cascades, and in the presence of Mario Plourde, President and CEO of the Quebec multinational, a total of $100,000 in scholarships and services was awarded to 24 Quebec student-athletes at the Auberge Saint-Gabriel in Montreal. Among the recipients was swimmer Ashlyn Massey, 18, from Saint-Lazare. 

CETAM wins award for community paramedicine project

Last week, ambulance service leaders from across Canada gathered in Quebec City for their annual summit. The Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie (CETAM), represented at the event, received an award of excellence for its community paramedicine project developed in collaboration with the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Centre (CISSS-MC). The Award of Excellence for Client Centered Initiative was presented at this Paramedic Chiefs of Canada Annual Leadership Summit 2024.

SI de Pincourt/NDIP executives recognized for years of service

At the 56th annual convention of the Association des gestionnaires en sécurité incendie et civile du Québec, the Service de sécurité incendie de Pincourt/Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot was honored. During the event, held from June 1 to 4, the manager and assistant manager of this 82-strong brigade, Yanick Bernier and Stéphane Séguin, received medals for distinguished service. 

Vaudreuil-Dorion inaugurates its new fire station

On Thursday, the Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion officially inaugurated its new fire station at 85, route de Lotbinière in the Dorion sector, in the presence of Mayors Guy Pilon and Peter Zytynsky, respectively of Vaudreuil-Dorion and Pointe-des-Cascades, as well as a number of elected officials, members of the Fire Department and invited guests.

"The Municipality has no intention of banning little hockey players from playing in the street"

Citizens concerned about the regulations regarding free play on the streets of Les Cèdres were out in force on June 11, when the municipal council held an information session.

A directory of resources for seniors is launched

The Table de concertation des aînés de Vaudreuil-Soulanges launched its new resource directory, listing over 50 organizations offering assistance and services for people aged 50 and over.
