The Town's request was refused by MTQMD
No future speed reduction on route 338 near Saint-Zotique beach
The 70 km/hour speed limit on Route 338, near the Saint-Zotique beach, will not be reduced as requested by the municipal council. Mayor Yvon Chiasson indicated in his "rendez-vous du maire", posted on the local Facebook page, that the proposal had been rejected by the Ministère des Transports et de la mobilité durable.
The road, which crosses the territories of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Les Cèdres, Pointe-des-Cascades, Coteau-du-Lac, Les Coteaux, Saint-Zotique and Rivière-Beaudette, is under provincial jurisdiction and belongs to this government body. All decisions relating to it must be submitted to it, and the MTQMD has the final say.
"Earlier this year, I met with MTQMD representatives to discuss a number of issues, including reducing the speed limit on Route 338 near the municipal beach. Letters expressing this wish had also been sent to this ministry and to Minister Geneviève Guilbault. Despite these efforts, the ministry has informed me that the speed limit of 70 km/h in this sector will remain and will not be reduced. According to the MTQMD, it is adequate. To affirm this, it relies on studies and observations made on site," says the chief magistrate.
Despite this refusal, the town may opt for another alternative. "Rather than building sidewalks in this sector, a project that would cost us around $8 million, we have asked the MTQMD for permission to install bollards during the spring, summer and autumn. Our aim is to make the area and the pedestrians who use it on a daily basis safer. If the MTQMD refuses, we will review our position on sidewalk construction. I've been promised a response to this proposal in the next few weeks, before spring."
