The Sûreté du Québec is urging residents of Vaudreuil-Soulanges and surrounding areas to be vigilant as it investigates a fraud scheme that is gaining popularity in the area. A Vaudreuil-Dorion couple learned this the hard way after being cheated out of $8,000.

"At this point, I am not in a position to confirm much information other than that the investigation is ongoing in connection with a false representative scheme. No arrests have been made in this case at this time," says Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman Marythé Bolduc.

According to TVA Nouvelles, the events date back to January 10, when a man dressed in a mailman's uniform showed up at the family home. Dressed in Canada Post livery, he had a payment terminal in his hand, which he handed to the occupant. The latter was asked to pay the sum of $2 to take possession of a letter addressed to her daughter, who was on vacation abroad at the time.

The woman was unaware of the deception, as the card was hidden under the receipt issued by the terminal.

It wasn't until the employees went to the bank that they realized the scam. But it was too late: the woman's bank account was empty after the fraudster had passed through and made numerous purchases with it, including at Bestbuy.
