Recycling now easier in Vaudreuil-Soulanges
Since January 1, significant changes have been made to recyclable material collection in Vaudreuil-Soulanges as part of the Quebec Government's modernization of the selective collection system.
These changes aim to hold companies that place packaging and printed materials on the market accountable, harmonize blue bin collection, and simplify sorting for citizens.
However, the transition has not been without challenges. Since the new management of recyclable material collection came into effect, several delays have been reported.
“We are aware of the various issues that arose during recent blue bin collections carried out by the new company responsible for the service since January 1, 2025,” stated the MRC in a press release.
The MRC assures that all necessary measures have been taken and that they are actively collaborating with relevant parties to prevent future complications. “Continuous and rigorous follow-ups are being conducted and will continue in the coming weeks to ensure optimal service delivery for the population.”
What Are the Impacts for Citizens?
The modernization, overseen by Éco Entreprises Québec, aims to standardize the system nationwide, establish a uniform list of accepted materials across Quebec, integrate quality criteria for collection and sorting, and develop better markets for recyclable materials.
The list of materials accepted in the blue bin has now been simplified and standardized across the province: containers, packaging, and printed materials. Plastics numbered 1 through 7, as well as unnumbered plastics and food-grade polystyrene, can now be placed in the blue bin.
This means all containers and packaging (whether flexible or rigid and made of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, or metal) and printed materials (made of paper or other fibers, often featuring text, patterns, or images) can be recycled during blue bin collections.
However, certain exceptions apply, such as aerosol containers, containers that held hazardous materials, and protective polystyrene packaging (Styrofoam). These must still be disposed of properly at one of the network’s ecocentres.
It’s worth noting that while food-grade polystyrene and plastic number 6 are now accepted in the blue bin, these materials will also continue to be accepted at ecocentres to provide a transition and adaptation period throughout 2025.
Citizens are encouraged to visit the Tricycle website for the full list of accepted materials.
