The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility informs road users that the work required to reopen additional lanes on the current Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge will continue through the winter. For now, no increase in load capacity on the bridge is possible.

The reopening of a fourth traffic lane was initially planned for the end of 2024, but some beams on the bridge in the Senneville sector have continued to deteriorate.

According to the latest analyses and the progress of the work, a fourth lane can reopen once the bracing on either side of a pier in the Senneville sector is completed, which is expected before the end of winter.

As part of the work on the current structure and the construction of the new bridge, weekend closures of Highway 40 between Vaudreuil-Dorion and Senneville will be necessary over the coming months. These closures will be announced in advance.

Traffic Management and Mitigation Measures

Until further notice, all collective transport mitigation measures will remain in effect. Regarding traffic management on the bridge, unless temporary adjustments are required due to weather conditions, two of the three open lanes will remain available:

  • Toward Montreal: Midnight to 10:00 a.m. on weekdays, except on holidays.
  • Toward Vaudreuil-Dorion: Noon to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, all weekends and holidays, as well as from December 25 to January 2 inclusive.

In total, three lanes remain available for road users on the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge, including two in the direction of peak traffic during rush hours.

Additionally, since November 16, buses have been allowed to use the shoulder on eastbound Highway 40, enabling passengers to bypass part of the congestion before reaching the bridge.
