Quebec police services, in collaboration with road controllers from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), will intensify their interventions from now until January 2, 2025, as part of the national coordinated operation (ONC) targeting impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs.

These efforts will include roadside checkpoints with potential impairment screenings. Simultaneously, an awareness campaign will be launched across various police organizations' social media platforms. This campaign aims to remind drivers of the serious consequences of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

On December 12, police will also conduct a national road safety operation to counter impaired driving and check winter tires across Quebec.

SAAQ Holiday Campaign

The SAAQ will roll out its traditional holiday awareness campaign from December 2 to December 29. Under the theme "There are plenty of good reasons to be a designated driver," the campaign will emphasize the importance of not driving after consuming alcohol and highlight the critical role of designated drivers.

Using a designated driver is an effective, simple, and accessible solution that ensures everyone gets home safely. Planning transportation before heading out for the evening—such as designating a driver—is a responsible behavior that helps prevent tragedies.

Impaired Driving: A Leading Cause of Road Fatalities

Impaired driving remains one of the primary causes of road deaths in Quebec. Between 2018 and 2022, alcohol was a factor in 25% of fatal collisions and 15% of collisions involving serious injuries.

It is crucial to dispel myths surrounding how quickly one can recover the ability to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs. Only time can eliminate the effects of such substances. Additionally, attempting to estimate one’s blood alcohol level before driving is highly risky and should be avoided. Even a single drink can impair driving ability, and the safest choice is always to refrain from driving after consuming alcohol or drugs.

A Unified Effort for Road Safety

This national coordinated operation is a partnership between the Sûreté du Québec, the Quebec Association of Police Chiefs, the SAAQ, and all police services across Quebec. It serves as a reminder of the shared commitment to keeping roads safe during the holiday season.
