Sunday November 3 marked the end of the 2024 cycling season. To mark the culmination of another remarkable year, the Fédération québécoise des sports cyclistes (FQSC) held its traditional closing brunch, during which the Mérite cycliste québécois awards were presented.

A number of people involved in cycling were honoured for their contribution to the sport, including Vaudreuil-Dorion cyclist Jonathan Hinse and the Canadian BMX Championships held in Coteau-du-Lac last July.

The Canadian BMX Championships, held for the first time in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, brought together 650 participants and mobilized some 30 dedicated volunteers. The event stood out for the quality of its track, its impeccable organization, and the attention paid to hospitality, with top-quality meals.

With participants from five different provinces, the event created a real moment of communion for the BMX community. The webcast reached 4.7K views, reinforcing the event's national impact. Certified FQSC Silver Eco, it combined sporting excellence and eco-responsibility, consolidating the reputation of Canadian BMX.

Up-and-coming athletes rewarded

Jonathan Hinse was named Junior Athlete of the Year, and also received the Jean-Yves Labonté Meritas award.

In his last year as a junior, Jonathan Hinse first shone at the Canadian Track Championships, where he was the star of the event, winning nine medals in as many events, including five national titles, earning him a place at the World Championships, where he finished 7th in the scratch race and 8th in the team pursuit.

Despite a number of injuries disrupting his road season, Hinse claimed three podiums, including a stage win at the Tour de l'Abitibi. He also finished third in the points classification.

Finally, the young athlete from Vaudreuil-Dorion was awarded the Méritas Jean-Yves Labonté. An initiative created in 2015 by Michel Lacouline, this award aims to recognize Jean-Yves Labonté's contribution to up-and-coming cycling athletes. The FQSC therefore decided to create this scholarship program in honor of this builder of Quebec cycling.
