A child under the age of 5 drowned this Wednesday in a residential pool on rue des Merles in Coteau-du-Lac.

Sûreté du Québec police were called to assist CÉTAM paramedics at around 7:30 pm. According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Valérie Beauchamp, the paramedics had been called to the scene of a child in cardiorespiratory arrest.

CPR was quickly performed on the child's small body, and he was transported to hospital in critical condition. "Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead a little later at the hospital," confirms the spokeswoman.

An investigation was launched by the Sûreté du Québec's major crimes division, which went to the scene to establish the causes and circumstances of this sad event. A forensic identification team was also on the scene for analysis.

The investigation is continuing in collaboration with the coroner's office.
