Last Thursday saw the launch of a joint exhibition by Cité-des-Jeunes art students and Cégep de Valleyfield visual arts graduates, at the Armand-Frappier library in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. The theme of dreams was chosen by all exhibitors. The exhibition runs until June 13, 2024.

Students from Cité-des-Jeunes focused on self-portraits with an explanatory vignette, while those from Cégep de Valleyfield tried their hand at silkscreening, a new art form for many of them. Each silkscreen was accompanied by an explanatory text on the dream. In addition, the Vaudreuil-Dorion students each created a mini sculpture.

In all, 14 students from Valleyfield and 23 from Cité-des-Jeunes are exhibiting their work until June 13.

Of course, the two teachers, Érick Cyr from the Cégep and Nancy Lépine from the Cité-des-Jeunes, who accompanied the young people on their way to the exhibition, attended the opening.

Also on hand to celebrate the event were CEGEP General Manager Marc Rémillard, accompanied by his daughter Olivia, pedagogical advisor and project manager Ann Quesnel, and Cité-des-Jeunes sports and arts studies coordinator Jean-François Lacroix.

Mr. Lacroix confirmed that interest in the sports-arts-studies program is growing steadily. “Now we have to make a selection,” he admits.

The general manager explained to Neomedia that, in his opinion, “young people have to discover their interests, explore to find out what they really want to do”, adding that “the people around them are also very important”.

He reminds us that the Cégep also offers upgrading courses, a 2nd chance, for students who didn't pass their high school French. They can enroll in this course while following their specific program at the Cégep.

Ms. Lépine took the floor with some of her students. She thanked the parents who lovingly bring their children to school and to the shows. She congratulated the young people on helping each other and surpassing themselves. Artist Agnès Robin, who guided the Vaudreuil-Dorion youngsters in creating the self-portraits, was unable to attend, but was warmly thanked by the art teacher.

Samuel Ladouceur, a graduating student at the Cégep, was delighted: “I really enjoyed the experience, it was my first exploration into silkscreen printing and I found it very enriching.

Every year, the Cégep offers a free pedagogical camp to ease the transition from high school to college, and enable young people to make informed choices.

The Cégep also offers double DECs in Natural Sciences/Visual Arts and Humanities/Visual Arts. Registrations are open until June 13.

The exhibition runs until June 13, in room DM-02 of the Armand-Frappier library in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, 80, rue Saint-Thomas. Visit the library's Facebook page or call 450-370-4860 for information.
