Les Coteaux wants to create a Miyawaki mini-forest
Les Coteaux wants to create a Miyawaki mini-forest in Audrey Park. At least, that's what was announced at the last municipal council meeting held on May 21.
What is the Miyawaki method? It was inspired by the eponymous Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, and has already proved its worth in several cities in Quebec and Europe. It involves creating a resilient micro-forest in the heart of the city.
This innovative method calls for a planting density of 3 trees per square metre, with an emphasis on native species to encourage rapid growth. In just a few years, this micro-forest will develop into a mature forest ecosystem, helping to combat climate change.
In Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the Town of Pincourt planted a Miyawaki mini-forest in the Olympic Park last October.
To complete the project, the municipality will apply for financial assistance under the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Community and Development Fund Grant Program.
