On Tuesday, May 7, well-known Vaudreuil-Soulanges businessman Peter Varvaro, owner of Smoke Meat Pete's restaurant in L'Île-Perrot, was finally sentenced for a probation violation that required his criminal record to be docketed 19 times.

It should be remembered from the outset that Mr. Varvaro did not complete the community service sentence imposed on him by the Tribunal in 2016 after he was convicted of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

As a result of this offence, he received a work sentence, which he was unable to complete within 12 months due to his medical condition. Mr. Varvaro suffers from incurable terminal cancer. In 2019, he returned to court to answer a new charge related to community service not completed within the allotted time.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Judge Joey Dubois endorsed the suggestion of the prosecutors in the case, Me.Chloé McFarlane for the Crown and Me. Alexandre Dubé for the defense. As a result, he sentenced Mr. Varvaro to a three-month conditional sentence.

“My customer will have to stay at home 24 hours a day for the first month, except for medical treatment. He can go grocery shopping on Wednesdays from 1pm to 5pm. For the following two months, he will have to be at home or at the restaurant where he works, except in the case of medical treatment, and will be subject to a curfew from midnight to 6am.He will, however, be able to be at the restaurant after these hours if he needs to, since he works there", indicated Mr. Varvaro's lawyer, Me.Alexandre Dubé to Néomédia.

For her part, Crown prosecutor Me.MacFarlane read out the many conditions the accused will have to respect during his sentence. These included: not disturbing the peace, good conduct, answering calls from his probation officer, answering court summonses and many others.

Judge Joey Dubois reminded Mr. Varvaro to take this sentence seriously, and that failure to comply with the conditions could result in him being incarcerated for breach of probation and completing his sentence behind bars.
