Starting this year, the month of May will be known as “Bike Month” in Quebec, an initiative that has just received official approval from the National Assembly.

This recognition is an important step for cycling enthusiasts across the province, after many municipalities and organizations have already emphasized the importance of this month dedicated to cycling over the years.

On April 23, a motion presented by Étienne Grandmont, responsible for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly, making May official Bike Month.

Until May 31, Vélo Québec is inviting Quebecers to get out their bikes and take part in the friendly Défi du Mois du vélo competition, which will take place across the province.

In Vaudreuil-Soulanges, for example, you can take advantage of a 35 km bike path along the Soulanges Canal. Fully paved, this multifunctional trail crosses woodlands and fields from Pointe-des-Cascades to Rivière-Beaudette. The Soulanges bike path is part of Route verte No 5, making it accessible from the island of Montreal, as well as from Ontario via the Waterfront Trail.

For those seeking a more extreme experience, Mont Rigaud is the perfect place for mountain biking, with over 20 kilometers of enduro trails ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as a bike park.

The mountain also offers a mountain bike equipment rental service and a workshop for minor repairs and maintenance. The Centre de la nature Quatre Saisons in Coteau-du-Lac also offers several kilometers of mountain bike trails, as well as a pump track for BMX bikes.
The Bike Month Challenge

This year, to take part in the Challenge, participants are invited to use the Geovelo platform, an intuitive and simplified application that is also a useful tool for planning bike trips.

In addition to individuals and organizations, the Challenge is now available to campuses, communities and territories. It's a free, friendly competition designed to show how easy and enjoyable it is to get around by bike.  The goal: convince as many people as possible to cycle for at least 10 minutes during the month of May.

Also, to make the Challenge even more attractive, a number of prizes are up for grabs. These include six bikes, Decathlon gift cards, SÉPAQ annual passes and more. In all, the prizes total over $6,000.
