Danny Lauzon, was given a suspended sentence, along with two years' probation, by Judge Bertrand St-Arnaud, this Tuesday, April 23, at the Valleyfield courthouse in connection with a simple assault committed in Les Coteaux in November 2021.

The two prosecutors in the case are Me. Cyril Routhier for the Crown and Me. Alexandre Dubé for the defence. The accused, who was also found guilty of mischief against a car, was charged summarily. He has a history of threats and assaults dating back to 2007.

As is the case in many files, the two lawyers agreed on a joint suggestion, namely the imposition of a suspended sentence, accompanied by two years' probation with several conditions, including keeping the peace and being of good behaviour.  The request was endorsed by Judge St-Arnaud.

“My client is waiting for psychological follow-up, but the delays in the health system are longer than those in the justice system, so he hasn't yet received an answer to his request. He has three children with his wife, and they only communicate when it's really necessary to discuss custody,” explains Me. Dubé.

The judge was also relieved to see that no further incidents have occurred between the two ex-partners since November 2021.

Present in the courtroom, the man's victim made a point of speaking before the judge. “It's difficult for me to speak today. This case has caused me a lot of stress. It's quite something to lodge an official complaint against someone with whom you've shared your life for so long and had children. This time, I had no choice but to lodge a complaint. My protection, and that of my children, was at stake. The file has been submitted 14 times since it was opened. Each time, I've had to go back into painful and stressful memories. I've begun a long healing process.I'm under medical care for post-traumatic shock,” she told the magistrate.

He thanked her for her courage. “Thank you for your testimony. On a day-to-day basis, we tend to forget that the cases handled here in this Tribunal have an impact on real people. We sometimes see up to 150 cases a day in front of us, so it's easy to lose sight of the fact that victims live with the consequences on a daily basis. It's important to say so,” she told the magistrate.

Defense attorney Alexandre Dubé apologized for the delay in processing the case. Originally, Me.Guy Lalonde, who was the lawyer on the case, but had to retire early due to health problems. He therefore transferred his files to his colleagues Mes.Dubé and Vinet, resulting in additional delays.
