In less than a month's time, on April 8, a solar eclipse is scheduled to take place in the Quebec sky. This rare astrological phenomenon could well cause schools in the region to close. The subject inspired this week's poll question.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon lies between the Earth and the Sun, and the Sun is completely hidden for a short period of time. It can be dangerous to look at it with the naked eye without protective glasses.

Earlier in February, the Centre de services scolaires des Trois-Lacs (CSSTL) confirmed that it was studying various safety measures to be put in place. Elsewhere in Quebec, several school service centers have already announced the suspension of classes.

According to the "Éclipse Québec" platform, part of Vaudreuil-Soulanges will be plunged into darkness for a few minutes around 3:25 p.m. on April 8.

Some municipalities, such as Sainte-Marthe, Rigaud Très-Saint-Rédempteur, Sainte-Justine-de-Newton and Hudson, will experience a partial eclipse instead.

Why close the schools?

It's important to remember that observing the Sun in general, but especially during a solar eclipse, can cause significant temporary or permanent damage to the retina.
It's best to wear glasses specially designed for this purpose.

It's this safety issue that has prompted service centers to consider declaring April 8 an educational day.Indeed, since the eclipse will reach its peak just after school lets out, at the very moment when thousands of students will be out and about on foot or by school bus, it may be difficult to ensure the safety of both schoolchildren and school staff.

This week's poll question is as follows: Solar eclipse: should we close schools as a precautionary measure?

The answer choices are:

- Yes, I think it's the best solution;

- Yes, because the dangers of the eclipse are real if viewed unprotected;

- No, we should simply adjust the class schedule to accommodate the eclipse;

- No, I think we need to do more awareness-raising or prevention on the subject;

- No, I don't think it's necessary to miss an extra day of school for this reason;
