On Friday, February 23, Cégep de Valleyfield took advantage of a visit from the Minister of Higher Education, Pascale Déry, to officially inaugurate phase 2 of its student residence expansion project. Now complete, the building welcomes 139 student residents at the corner of Champlain and Saint-Thomas.

"As soon as the residence was inaugurated in 2018, phase 2 was in the plans, it was only a matter of time. For several years now, Cégep de Valleyfield has had to deal with a significant increase in its clientele, forcing us to find solutions to make up for the lack of space. The relocation of the residence at 150 Champlain Street was necessary in 2018 to enable us to convert the space occupied by the residence into teaching space," explained Cégep de Valleyfield General Manager Marc Rémillard in May 2022, when the project was announced.

To complete the expansion, a total of $8 million was required. Of this amount, $5.7 million came from a loan from the provincial government, while the Cégep de Valleyfield injected $1.6 million.

On the technical side, the same firms selected for the first phase carried out this extension.
Each room is similar to those already built, and includes a kitchen table, a work table, a chair on castors, a single bed with drawers, a good-quality mattress and a storage cupboard. Each unit also has a full bathroom with standard shower.

In addition, on each floor there is a kitchenette that provides residents with a built-in sink, a four-element hotplate, a refrigerator including a freezer, and a microwave hood.

The building is also equipped with an elevator, a study room on each floor, laundry facilities (for a fee and reserved for residents), a shared kitchen with stove, microwave, sink and TV, and an outdoor recreation area. A chip-based security system controls access to the 24h\7 residence.

In the wake of this work, the Cégep de Valleyfield has confirmed the creation of an on-site guardhouse and the hiring of a full-time janitor to maintain the building.
