Heavy rain: how to check your drainage pump to avoid flooding?
The precipitation currently falling in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region on Monday December 18 is likely to cause water levels to rise throughout the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC. Several riverside municipalities are urging their residents to check that their drainage pumps are working properly.
Many lessons were learned from the floods of 2017 and 2019 in Vaudreuil-Soulanges. This mechanism, mandatory in many municipalities, prevents sewer backups in basements or when groundwater reaches the foundations of a dwelling. Clay soils are much more prone to waterlogging.
How to check?
Even though there are different types of pumps, submersible or column-mounted, it is possible to check their operation.
Remove debris from the catch basin
Lift the floating part and start the motor
Check that the discharge pipe is clear and discharges water outside, away from the foundation.
Pour in water to see if it flows properly
It's important to remember that submersible pumps have a lifespan of 5 to 15 years, while column-mounted pumps, which are otherwise less expensive but noisier, can last up to 25 years. The purchase of a battery-powered auxiliary pump is also recommended in the event of a power failure.
