Terrasse-Vaudreuil and L'Île-Perrot landlocked
Car/train collision in L'Île-Perrot
A vehicle collided with a Canadian National (CN) train at L'Île-Perrot Nord shortly before 7 a.m. on Monday morning.
"We have very few details about the circumstances of the collision. All we know is that there were no injuries and that the airbags were not deployed," confirms Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman Ève Brochu-Joubert.
The CN train was immobilized for just over an hour between Terrasse-Vaudreuil and L'Île-Perrot stations, blocking all access. No vehicle could enter or leave Terrasse-Vaudreuil or L'Île-Perrot Nord.
This situation prompted a strong reaction from Terrasse-Vaudreuil mayor Michel Bourdeau. "The municipality was cut off for over an hour. It's very worrying. If there were an emergency requiring an ambulance, it wouldn't even be able to get there. Luckily, we have firefighters who are also first responders, but they're not paramedics," he told Neomedia.
"I'm definitely going to ask for a meeting with the highest authorities so that an emergency measures plan can be clearly defined and put in place," he added.
For her part, the MP for Vaudreuil, Marie-Claude Nichols, also expressed great concern about the situation. "As soon as the mayor of Terrasse-Vaudreuil contacted me, I called Minister Geneviève Guilbault's office. There's an emergency protocol to follow in situations like this. They have to uncouple the cars to separate them and leave access for vehicles. They did finally uncouple the cars, but we still had to call to get it done. It's really taking too long to apply emergency measures," she laments.
By 8:45 a.m., the Île-Perrot station was operational again, and access to Terrasse-Vaudreuil had been restored.
