Néomédia in-house survey
Violence and bullying at school: responsibility belongs to the parents
Since the start of the school year, several acts of violence have made the headlines, most notably at École secondaire des Échos in Vaudreuil-Dorion. The subject therefore inspired Néomédia's poll question of the week.
Gangs, fights between students, threats to staff - in short, the situation has parents and students worried.
The Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, recently presented his Violence and Bullying Prevention Plan. The plan, which comes with a budget of $30 million over five years, has four main thrusts, aimed at documenting, training, raising awareness and supporting both students and school staff in the face of rising violence.
More than a dozen measures will be implemented "to develop the social and emotional skills" of students. These measures include the standardization of schools' anti-violence and anti-bullying plans, and the addition of mandatory content at primary and secondary levels.
Last week's poll question was as follows: Do you think schools are doing enough to combat violence and bullying?
Here are the results of this in-house poll:
- Yes, I trust the principals and teachers: 7.7%;
- They do what they can with the resources available: 7,7%;
- No, school security should be reinforced: 38.5%;
- The responsibility belongs to the parents, not the schools: 46.2%.
