As the towns and municipalities of Vaudreuil-Soulanges work to draw up their budgets for 2024, Néomédia wondered about the salaries of the territory's elected officials.

Although this data is public, it is often difficult to find. While technically they should be available on your municipality's website, this may not be the case.

It is important to understand how the salaries of elected municipal officials are determined. First of all, there is no pre-established salary scale for elected municipal officials.

According to the Loi sur le traitement des élus municipaux:, "the council of a municipality shall, by by-law, fix the remuneration of its mayor or prefect and of its other members. The by-law may provide for the remuneration to be indexed upwards, where applicable, for each fiscal year beginning after the year in which the by-law comes into force.

In addition, for the salary to be approved, at least four of the six councillors and the mayor must vote in favour of the proposed amount.

Total remuneration depends on a number of factors. It includes a base salary for the duties for which the person is elected. In addition, there is an expense allowance.

Additional remunerations may be added if the elected official is part of an executive committee, or sits on a mandated body, a concertation table, the MRC or the CMM.

How much did your elected officials earn in 2022?

As mentioned above, it's not easy to compile the data. 

The salaries listed in our research are for 2022. Why is this? Because these are the most recent data available from the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation.

They are taken from the 2022 financial reports submitted by each municipality, with a fiscal year ending December 31, 2022. Salary includes base pay, expense allowances and any additional remuneration.

The highest-paid elected official in 2022 was Patrick Bousez, mayor of Rivière-Beaudette and prefect of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC, with a total of $184,268.

On the other hand, Mario Tremblay, mayor of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, earned $12,695. 

Only data for L'Île-Cadieux is missing.

Population data for each municipality is based on the most recent census (2021).
