Another busy week draws to a close. Here's what's been in the news in Vaudreuil-Soulanges over the past few days. 

L'Actuel launches its Christmas sponsorship campaign

Center d'action bénévole L'Actuel kicks off the 2023 edition of its Christmas Sponsorships. People interested in giving gifts can now fill out the online registration form.

Composting platform: Saint-Polycarpe council gives its position

Like the Town of Coteau-du-Lac, the Municipality of Saint-Polycarpe has passed a resolution asking the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges to reconsider its choice of site for the composting facility. 

First workplace childcare center opens in Coteau-du-Lac   

The Minister for the Family, Suzanne Roy, was at the Pavillon Wilson in Coteau-du-Lac on Monday October 16 at 10 a.m. to launch the very first pilot project for an educational day-care service in the workplace. The initiative, which takes place on this municipal territory, is the first of its kind in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC. 

A 5th edition of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Social Development

On October 12, over 120 people from the municipal, business, community, education, health and civic sectors took part in the 5th Regional Forum on Sustainable Social Development in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, held at the community center of the municipality of Sainte-Marthe.

Vaudreuil-Dorion finalist for the Recognition of Outstanding Embellishment Award

The Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion's Mosaïculture project has been selected as one of the finalists for the Recognition of Outstanding Embellishment Award in the 5000 + population category. The winners will be announced on November 2 at the official Fleurons du Québec unveiling in Saint-Hyacinthe.

Elementary school teachers adopt a mandate for an unlimited general strike

At a general meeting on Friday, October 13, the 1302 elementary school teachers of the Centre de services scolaires des Trois-Lacs and members of the Syndicat de l'enseignement de la région de Vaudreuil (SERV-CSQ) voted in favor of a strike mandate that could go as far as an unlimited general strike.

New service for children with an intellectual disability or ASD with a behavioral disorder  

The Fondation des Ressources Alternatives du Sud-Ouest (FRAS) was proud to announce at a press conference that it had acquired Camp Bosco, an exceptional natural site that is dear to the hearts of Suroît residents. 

Councillor Jasmine Sharma proposes that Vaudreuil-Dorion adopt eco-taxation tools

At the Vaudreuil-Dorion City Council meeting held on Monday, October 16, District 3 - Des Bâtisseurs Councillor Jasmine Sharma tabled a motion to mandate the city's general management to analyze and propose eco-taxation tools to achieve the city's environmental objectives in terms of sustainable mobility and control of urbanization and its impacts. Ms. Sharma's proposal was unanimously adopted by the Board.

Victim of pesticides, he fights for people in his situation   

Since December 2019, Serge Boily, a man in his fifties, has been on a mission: to raise awareness and inform the population of Quebec about the dangers of prolonged exposure to pesticides. Mr. Boily is one of only twenty people in Quebec to have his illness, Parkinson's, recognized as an occupational disease related to his former job.

Composting platform: a petition is launched

Just over 10 days after launching its petition, the citizens' group protesting against the choice of site for the regional composting platform has managed to collect almost 500 signatures.

Town of Saint-Zotique spends $700,000 more than planned to dredge three canals  

The Saint-Zotique municipal council has had to pay out an additional sum of nearly $300,000 as part of an out-of-court settlement reached in the case of the dredging of the mouths of canals S-2 (65th Avenue), S-3 (68th Avenue) and S-4 (81st Avenue). 

A lottery ticket bought in Vaudreuil-Dorion makes people happy

Chantal Fournier, from Montérégie, recently won $500,000 by scratching a fortune $500,000 ticket. The lady had purchased her ticket at the Acco-Fruits convenience store, located at 128, boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes, in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

2021 Hawkesbury Hospital murders: trial to begin in 2024

The trial of Brian Nadler, the Quebec doctor accused of killing four people, including Rigaud resident Claire Brière, while working at the Hawkesbury General Hospital, will be held in Ottawa in 2024.

Les Coteaux: A new fissure appears on rue Lippé

A new fissure has been detected on rue Lippé in Les Coteaux. Closed since last July following the collapse of a section between 8 and 10 rue Lippé, a new fissure between addresses 42 and 46 is keeping local residents and municipal authorities on their toes.

A $7,650 tax imposed by the Town of Saint-Zotique on new homeowners within its territory has not met with unanimous approval. At recent municipal council meetings, including the most recent on Tuesday, October 17, the subject was raised during question period.
