Speed bump and speed limit reduction in Saint-Zotique
At its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 17, the Saint-Zotique council approved three decisions relating to road safety on its territory.
The first concerns rue du Diable in district 4. After receiving a petition signed by 75% of the street's residents, the elected officials agreed to the installation of a speed bump in front of civic addresses 535, 536, 537 and 538. In all, the occupants of 24 homes on this street signed the petition asking the Town to take this step.
During the question period, some residents present in the room asked that the current speed limit of 40 km per hour be lowered to 30 km per hour in the area. "When a street speed is lowered to 30km/h, it's because there's a park or a school nearby, and young children may be travelling there. On your street, that's not the case", replied Mayor Yvon Chiasson.
During the same meeting, the municipal council also announced its intention to submit a request to the Ministère des Transports du Québec to reduce the speed limit to 50 km/h on Route 338, between 65th Avenue and 71st Avenue.
"We're going to ask for a traffic study following a citizen request we received. Last week, I had the opportunity to speak face-to-face with Minister Guilbault, and she told me to submit the request directly to her office. A copy of the resolution will also be forwarded to the MNA for Soulanges, Marilyne Picard", says Chiasson.
The Town is also asking the MTQ to implement a mandatory stop sign at the intersection of 70th Avenue and Principale Street.
Finally, the elected officials also tabled a notice of motion to signify their intention to lower the speed limit to 30 km/hour in the area of the new high school, as well as on 20th Street and 34th Avenue.
