260 trees to be planted on municipal territory this autumn
The Municipality of Les Coteaux adopts a reforestation plan
To replace the 244 ash trees felled by the emerald ash borer, the Municipality of Les Coteaux adopted its reforestation plan on September 18. To this end, it commissioned Groupe Ambioterra to carry out a vast reforestation campaign in its parks.
Made possible by the Ambioterra non-profit organization's "My tree, my forest, my future" campaign, the project calls for the planting of 560 native trees, 260 of which will be planted this fall.
The species to be planted have been meticulously selected according to the characteristics of their host land, to ensure they flourish optimally.
"We are proud to contribute to the reforestation of the municipality's parks, enabling Les Coteaux to carve out an important place for itself in the fight against climate change, by planting 260 trees native to the region, the majority of which will come from our nursery," says Karel Ménard, president of Ambioterra.
Fighting climate change one tree at a time
This reforestation plan will increase the sequestration capacity of atmospheric carbon dioxide for the next 30 to 40 years. That's roughly 46 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 that will be sequestered over the next 5 years.
"Not only will this project allow us to green our parks and introduce trees that are adapted to our conditions, but it will also enable us to actively participate in the fight against climate change. I'm very happy to see that concrete action has been taken today thanks to Ambioterra's help," adds Sylvain Brazeau, Mayor of the Municipalité des Coteaux.
Tree-planting subsidy
Citizens can benefit from a subsidy for the purchase of trees. Residents can claim up to $75 for the purchase of a tree.
"The tree-planting grant is a great opportunity for our citizens to actively contribute to the beautification of our community while acting in favor of the environment. Each tree planted is a concrete gesture towards a greener future," says Sébastien Demers, Director of Urban Planning, Land Development and Environment for the Municipality of Les Coteaux.
