Rigaud elected official recognized for promoting First Nations culture and history
On Sunday, September 24, 2023, Peter Schiefke, Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, presented the 2023 Community Service Awards at the Auberge des Gallants, recognizing the commitment and dedication of numerous individuals and organizations for their unwavering commitment and essential role in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges community.
Among these was Rigaud District 2 Councillor Archie Joseph Martin, who received a medal for his promotion of First Nations culture and history.
Born in Escuminac, New Brunswick, Mr. Martin is one of 12 children born to Mi'kmaq Acadian parents. Arriving in Montreal in 1966, he worked as a special constable at Expo 67, as well as for the Dosco company, before being hired as a security guard at Nortel Networks in 1969, where he spent the next 32 years of his life.
Insatiable, he also worked as a police officer for the City of Hudson and as a firefighter for the City of Rigaud, where he moved in 1971, and for which he has now served as a councillor since 2013. His passion for First Nations culture and traditions has led him to honor their memory and perpetuate their history for the past 17 years.
He and his wife, Pierrette Schofield, are the proud parents of three children, including a son and two daughters.
