On Saturday, September 22 at 10:15 a.m., the Ville de Coteau-du-Lac invited young and old alike to the inauguration of its skatepark in the Parc Paul-Stevens, which has undergone a facelift in recent months.
Many young skate sports enthusiasts were on hand to test out the new facilities or learn about the hobby.
"I'm very happy to be here to inaugurate our new skatepark. 20 years ago, the town was a pioneer in building its first modules for skateboarders. This year, we're even prouder that this project was made possible thanks to the involvement of five young citizens and a financial contribution from the Quebec government" explained Mayor Andrée Brosseau at the inaugural event.
Over the past few months, Noah Granito, Louis-Philippe Girard, Félix Lavigne, Brandon Daoust and his father, and Thomas Simard have met with elected officials. Their objective? Describe their dream skatepark and discuss the project with elected officials to determine the needs and expectations of future users of the facility.
"These new facilities will benefit our citizens by encouraging healthy lifestyles and physical exercise" she added.
Financial assistance of $95,000
To make this project a reality, the City of Coteau-du-Lac received $95,000 in financial assistance from the Quebec government, via the MNA for Soulanges, Marilyne Picard. This amount represents 67% of the budget invested in the project.
"I must emphasize the proactivity of the Coteau-du-Lac municipal council in this matter, but also in general.I have no doubt that the skatepark will attract outside customers and that it will be profitable for the town's merchants. It's also a fine example of collaboration between the municipal world and young citizens.Well done!"
This Saturday's special inauguration and "Skate Jam" was aimed at officially presenting the redevelopment of the skateboard and scooter park.
Interestingly, Justice Alternative du Suroît was also on hand to educate the young and not-so-young who were having fun nearby about graffiti. "We have a legal graffiti wall with us, and Justice Alternative du Suroît is on hand to explain the consequences of graffiti on an illegal wall. Be sure to stop by their information booth during the day", invited Marie-Claude Côté, Director of Communications for the City of Coteau-du-Lac.
Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the schedule included skateboard initiation, door prize draws, a pizza lunch, entertainment and fun challenges by Les Toasters.
The skatepark is located near École de l'Éclusière, on Chemin Saint-Emmanuel for those interested.
