Néomédia in-house survey
Economic immigration should be a priority in Canada, say our readers
A Léger poll* commissioned last May by Le Journal de Montréal/de Québec on the subject of immigration inspired the Néomédia team to come up with this week's poll question.
The survey was conducted online from May 12 to 15, among 1001 Quebecers aged 18 or over. The results were published on May 17.
The purpose of the survey was to shed light on perceptions of immigration and migration policies in Quebec and Canada. It revealed that 41% of the Quebec population felt that the province should welcome fewer immigrants.
The same survey also showed that 70% of Quebecers consider immigration to be an effective solution to the labour shortage, and 60% believe it to be a good solution to the aging population.
We can also welcome immigrants for other reasons. Humanism, for example, as in the case of refugees. Or to encourage family reunification. Welcoming foreign students can turn into eventual immigration.
This week's Néomédia Vaudreuil-Soulanges in-house poll asks: In your opinion, what type of immigration should be prioritized?
The choices were as follows:
- Economic immigration, to help with the labor shortage: 38.5%;
- Family immigration, to counter demographic aging: 3.8%;
- Humanitarian immigration, to help refugees: 3.8%;
- Student immigration, to foster a young, educated demographic: 11.5%;
- All these types of immigration, because they are equally valid: 30.8%;
- Immigration should be minimal in our society: 11.5%.
