Internet voting: Saint-Lazare wants to take part in the pilot project
For the next municipal elections in 2025, Ville de Saint-Lazare could take part in the Internet voting pilot project piloted by the Directeur général des élections du Québec (DGEQ).
The city indicated its interest in taking part in the project at the last municipal council meeting in August.
According to the DGEQ website, the project targets a limited number of electors in some fifteen municipalities with populations of 20,000 or more, with varied profiles and located in the province's various administrative regions.
As reported by Élection Québec when the initiative was announced, this would be no more than an additional option offered to the electorate to do their civic duty.
Attempts elsewhere show that this idea does not encourage new voters to cast their ballots, but simply makes it easier for those who are used to the democratic exercise.
"To participate in this pilot project, a municipality must first confirm its interest by means of a municipal council resolution. The applications are then analyzed, in particular to verify their eligibility and to ensure the diversity of the profiles of the municipalities selected," explains Élections Québec.
As mentioned at the Council meeting by Town Clerk and lawyer Nathaly Rayneault, agreements will have to be reached with Élections Québec if Ville de Saint-Lazare's candidacy is selected.
Ms. Rayneault also pointed out that once the terms and conditions of the project are known, the Town could withdraw.
To date, only the Ville de Saint-Lazare has volunteered to participate among the other municipalities of the MRC of Vaudreuil-Soulanges.
