Equestrian sports enthusiasts were delighted on August 25, 26 and 27 when the 7th edition of the gymkhana competition, organized by the Association Équestre Régionale Western Sud-Ouest Gymkhana (AERWSOG), was held at the Ranch de Sainte-Justine-de-Newton.
Nearly 200 riders aged 4 to 90 in six categories competed in eight events. A total of 1,109 races were run by some 230 horses and their riders.
"The majority of participants came from our group AERWSOG and the South-West region. Some come from as far away as the Outaouais, Lanaudière and even Ontario," says Marc-André Pilon, president of the organization.
Competitive events included slalom, barrel, back alley, flag, rescue, rider exchange, relay and pony express. The winners shared $15,300 in prize money.
"The season is not over for our riders. Next weekend, those who placed first and second in their categories will head to Sorel-Tracy to take part in the Provincial Gymkhana Championships. They'll have the chance to measure themselves against other champions from all over Quebec. It promises to be another great weekend," concludes Mr. Pilon.
