The 13th edition of the Vaudreuil-Dorion Optimist Club's soapbox race will be held on Saturday, September 9. Registration is underway for intrepid youngsters aged 7 to 12 interested in this fun activity.

"Parents of children who wish to participate should register them now on the Optimist Club website. It's important to point out that it's our organization that provides the soapboxes and protective equipment required for the race," says Georges Verboomen, a member of the organizing committee.

The race took place on the rue Chicoine hill, between rue Saint-Antoine and rue Chenonceau, in Vaudreuil-Dorion. "A fee of $5 per child will be charged on the morning of the race when participants arrive. This sum will enable us to cover the costs of holding the event. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a participation medal. The winners in each category will receive a trophy," he adds.

The first start will be at around 9 a.m., to the cheers and encouragement of the young participants' friends and family. Then, around noon, a hot dog lunch will be served. Interestingly, the event is open to all young people in the MRC, not just Vaudreuil-Dorion residents. The maximum number of runners is 100.

Volunteers needed

An event of this scale cannot be organized without human resources. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit the Club Optimiste website to find out how to register their interest.

Over the next few weeks, the organization will be taking part in a block party at Vaudreuil-Dorion's Bel-Air Park to raise awareness of its organization and promote the soapbox race on September 9. A racing car will be on hand for the curious.

"The deadline for registration is September 7. We won't be able to register for the activity that morning. You'll have to act fast, because places fill up fast," he concludes.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact Georges Verboomen at (514) 895-7940.
