Jeux du Québec: A look back at the first day of competition

The 57th finals of the Jeux du Québec opened in Rimouski on Friday, and already several athletes from the region stood out on the first day of competition on Saturday.

In the triathlon, Olivier Koniuszewski (Saint-Lazare) finished 17th in the race against the clock, with a time of 18:49.8.

In the girls' race, Agathe Richard (Vaudreuil-Dorion) and Carolane Pharand (L'Île-Perrot) placed 13th and 14th respectively. Agathe Richard clocked 21:03.7 and Carolane Pharand 21:08.8.

In the 14-15 category, Catherine Chevrier (Saint-Lazare) finished 7th in the time trial with a time of 20:48.5.

Road cycling

Young cyclists also competed on Saturday.

Alexia Nolet (Saint-Polycarpe) finished 31st in the time trial, completing the circuit in 17 minutes and 34 seconds. 

She did, however, manage to move up the rankings in the sprint, finishing in 19th place.

In the boys' category, Hugo Heroux (Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot) finished 33rd and 24th in both the time trial (15 minutes, 40 seconds) and the sprint.

In the U17 category, Christophe Massé (Coteau-du-Lac), Logan Malette (Les Coteaux) and Étienne Croze (Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot) placed 21st, 34th and 37th respectively in the time trial, with times of 12:08, 14:25 and 15:25.

In the sprint, Massé finished 13th, Croze 19th and Malette 31st.

Swimming

In the 12-14 category, Anne Vaillancourt (Vaudreuil-Dorion) placed 6th in the first round of the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 28.75 seconds.

In the 2km open water event, Frédérique Lauzon (Saint-Lazare) came 26th with a time of 31:24.8.

In the boys' event, Yaroslav Koval (Saint-Lazare) finished 34th (30.79 seconds) in the 50-meter freestyle, while Tyler Castelo (Saint-Lazare) finished 12th (1:05.45) in the 100-meter backstroke.

To watch this Sunday

The flag-bearer for the Sud-Ouest delegation will be in action on the track today. Mathias Robichaud (Les Cèdres) will be competing in his two favourite events, the 800m and 2000m steeplechase. 

In cycling, Christophe Massé, Logan Malette, Étienne Croze, Hugo Heroux and Alexia Nolet will take to the streets of Rimouski in the criterium event.

The triathletes will be in super sprint mode: 375m open water swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run.

The beach volleyball teams still have a big day of tournaments ahead of them. On the menu for the girls: Montreal (10 a.m.), Outaouais (11 a.m.), Capitale-Nationale (2 p.m.) and Côte-Nord (4 p.m.). For the boys: Mauricie (9 a.m.), South Shore (noon) and Laurentides (3 p.m.).

It's relay day in Open Water swimming at Parc du Mont-Saint-Mathieu. In the pool, youngsters will swim on their backs, stomachs, butterflies and breaststrokes in a flurry of races;

In baseball, the boys do a double: Côte-Nord at 8am, then Abitibi-Témiscamingue at 3:30pm.

Finally, in basketball, the girls start their day against Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean at 8 a.m., while the boys play Outaouais. Our two teams will have another afternoon match to be determined.
