Quebecers have something to celebrate today. It's World Poutine Day, a dish so popular in our gastronomic culture. More than 500 restaurants in 30 countries on every continent are taking part in this special day, initiated by Yves Beaudoin, connoisseur of this gastronomic delicacy and instigator of the "Poutine spots" directory of the best poutines.

Poutine first appeared in the snack bars of rural Quebec in the late 1950s. However, its exact origin is still debated.

It's a bit like another great debate that's been tearing Quebecers apart: Canadian or Nordic, Victoriaville and Drummondville have been battling for ages over the title of poutine's birthplace.

Be that as it may, whether it comes from Victo or Drummond, poutine remains the comfort food par excellence. Whether it's a field hockey victory, a heartbreak or a drunken night out with friends, there's no reason not to eat one.

Poutine in Vaudreuil-Soulanges

Every self-respecting snack bar has poutine on its menu. Some are even daring enough to offer different, original varieties.

The bistro Patate et Persil is a good example. General Tao, Indian, Portuguese and even Mexican poutines are all on the menu. You can even swap the classic patates for sweet potato fries.

La Frite à Brigitte offers up to 12 variations on the classic potato, cheese curd and brown gravy. You can add smoked meat, grilled meats, sausage and change the fries for onion rings.

In Hudson, casse-croûte Sauvé also has poutine on its menu.

In Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, Miss Poutine is the place to stop.  With its nine choices of poutine and its terrace, this little snack bar is a must on Île Perrot.

Of course, many other restaurants in the region, big chains or not, offer their version of the classic Quebec gastronomy.

Whether you're an Italian, galvaude, classic or sweet potato fan, take advantage of World Poutine Day to enjoy one to suit your palate!
