Citizen complains about poor pavement at Exit 1
Over $2 million to resurface Route 342 in Pointe-Fortune

Saint-Clet citizens aren't the only ones "fed up" with potholes. In Pointe-Fortune, one resident exasperated by the state of Route 342 is denouncing the situation and criticizing the small town's inaction on the issue.
"I live here and it makes no sense how bad the road is. I work in the towing industry and I go there to pick up cars with two or three flat tires on a regular basis. You'd better not ride your motorcycle on it and if you do, good luck," said the resident who requested anonymity.
Is the municipality waiting for a serious or fatal accident to occur before taking action? They could at least pave it a bit to try and make it less bad," said the resident.
He said it's not uncommon to see cars driving on the shoulder and grass when they pass the portion of Route 342 between Chemin des Outaouais and Montée Interprovinciale.
"Motorists trying to avoid one hole do so by driving over two others. The traffic lane is no longer passable. I'm pretty sure this street could win the title of worst road in Quebec in CAA Quebec's annual contest. It's just as bad, if not worse, than Saint-Clet at the corners of Routes 201 and 340," he added.
The man says he wants something to be done to improve the road's poor condition before a tragedy occurs.
"I don't think Pointe-Fortune is financially strong enough to face a prosecution for criminal negligence because of the pitiful state of the road. As a taxpayer, I obviously don't want that to happen," he said.
More than exasperated by the situation, the resident even compared Exit 1, which leads to Pointe-Fortune, to the roads in Afghanistan.
"A petition was circulated to get things moving, but the city says it has to wait until it has the budget to make major repairs. A week and a half ago, I was at the scene of an accident where five police officers were there on motorcycles," he said.
"I figured they noticed the deterioration of the road and that something would be done. But still nothing," said the gentleman who has given up hope.
Work estimated at over $2 million
Néomédia contacted the Municipalité de Pointe-Fortune to get an update on the situation.
They said a pothole repair operation was carried out on Wednesday, July 5, to repair the section of the busiest road between Montée Interprovinciale and Exit 1, which falls under municipal jurisdiction.
When asked whether any work is planned to repair the road in the short-term, General Manager Jean-Charles Filion gave the following reply by email:
"We're evaluating what can be done. However, the cost of repairing the pavement on the most damaged section alone, a 1.2 km stretch, is more than of $2 million," he said
"The municipality can't do this work from its annual operating budget so we have to find sources of funding and government assistance," Filion added.
The municipality has apparently received three claims from citizens for damage sustained by vehicles on this stretch of road, according to the source.
