Screenings of English language movies will be part of the line-up of summer activities for the residents of Notre-Dame-de-l'île Perrot.
Mayor Danie Deschênes confirmed to Néomedia in a text message this afternoon that the town "has informed the population that we will be showing English movies like we did in previous years."
"The population seems satisfied for now with our decision to show movies in both languages. But Bill 96 will reman a challenge for all non bilingual cities who want to offer equitable services to their populations," said Deschênes.
The films will be shown at Parc des Éperviers every Thursday from July 13, as part of the Les Jeudis dans les parcs series.
A total of seven screenings are scheduled as follows:
- July 13 - Le chat potté 2 - La dernière quette - V.F.
- July 20 - Despicable Me 3 - V.O.A.
- July 27 - Turning Red - V.O.A.
- August 3 - Raya et le dernier dragon - F.V.
- August 10 - Super Mario Bros.
- August 17 - Lyle the Crocodile - V.O.A.
Deschênes' confirmation about the English-language movie screenings came after recent online media reports stated the town would not show English movies to comply with the Quebec language law Bill 96.
Under Bill 96, municipalities must follow new guidelines regarding the use of English within their communities.
