A reminder from the police force
SQ advises residents to be cautious of fraudsters

Par John Jantak, Journaliste
Several recent reports of seniors targeted by fraudsters has prompted the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) to remind everyone about being vigilant to avoid becoming a victim.
Targeted individuals are often contacted by phone and told that a loved one, often a grandson, is in prison and needs a few thousand dollars to be released.
The fraudsters also sometimes use another person posing as a police officer or lawyer.
Various methods are used to scam money victims and fraudsters often take advantage of the vulnerability of some elderly people to put pressure on them.
The SQ advises everyone to be extremely cautious before trusting anyone and offer the following advice:
- Never hand over money to a stranger or anyone whose identity cannot be verified.
- If someone claims to be acting on behalf of an organization, contact the organization directly.
- Never divulge personal information to someone who cannot prove their legitimacy.
- When someone is too insistent or even insolent (e.g., demands your answer on the spot), don't trust them.
- Call the person's parents, another family member or friends to verify the validity of the story.
The SQ advises anyone who suspects a call is fraudulent to consult the Tips section on its website at www.sq.gouv.qc.ca.
