Vaudreuil-Dorion in talks to purchase arena

Vaudreuil-Dorion will buy the Cité-des-Jeunes arena and entrust its management to the towns of Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot (NDIP), Pincourt and Terrasse-Vaudreuil for the next five years.
"They are ready to take over operation of the arena, therefore we have begun negotiations with the owner. The asking price being discussed is $3 million but we're definitely going to negotiate," Vaudreuil-Dorion Mayor Guy Pilon told Néomédia.
The city said it has no real interest in the arena but is interested in the land.
"This is the only private land left on the Cité-des-Jeunes campus. Everything else belongs to the city or provincial government. Maybe the Centre de services scolaires would also be interested in buying it," said Pilon.
"We already have a few ideas for projects that could be done there. One thing is certain, when the lease agreement expires, the land will be worth 30 to 40 percent more than it is now," Pilon added.
Special council meetings were also held in the three participating municipalities to announce their commitment to the project by adopting resolutions at their respective sessions on Monday evening to proceed with the project.
In December 2022, the four municipalities on Île Perrot announced they intended to acquire the arena to meet the needs of their citizens.
The Town of L'Île-Perrot did not take part in the project because efforts to obtain subsidies have so far been unsuccessful.
The provincial Municipal Powers Act does not allow a city to acquire a building in another municipality with certain exceptions.
The acquisition of the arena by Vaudreuil-Dorion will enable NDIP, Pincourt and Terrasse-Vaudreuil to operate the facility and offer ice time to their citizens and organizations.
NDIP Mayor Danie Deschênes hinted the agreement was intended to move forward with a larger project - the construction of a sports infrastructure facility on Île Perrot.
"Our objective remains the same - create our own sports infrastructure. This agreement will enable us to set a timetable for construction. There is a real political will to do so among NDIP, Pincourt and Terrasse-Vaudreuil," said Deschênes.
The agreement will also enable citizens and the various sports associations in the three municipalities to benefit from the ice rink.
The intermunicipal agreement stipulates that organizations recognized by Vaudreuil-Dorion will benefit from the same rental rates including those on Île Perrot.
"The two ice surfaces at our municipal arena can barely meet the demand from our residents and associations. The Cité-des-Jeunes arena completes the offer and meets the needs of neighbouring municipalities," said Pilon.
"We made sure, however, that when blocks of ice time are available, our sports associations keep their priority," Pilon added.
