Vaudreuil-Dorion will purchase the Cité-des-Jeunes arena and entrust its management to the towns of Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, Pincourt and Terrasse-Vaudreuil for the next five years.
The announcement was made at the bi-monthly council meeting on June 19. Similar resolutions were adopted by the three participating municipalities on Île Perrot regarding their plans to lease the facility.
The municipalities on Île Perrot had announced their intention to acquire the sports infrastructure to meet the needs of their populations. The Town ofL'Île-Perrot did not take part in the project because their efforts to obtain subsidies for the project have been unsuccessful.
"The two ice surfaces in our municipal arena are barely sufficient to meet the needs of our residents and associations. Acquiring the Cité-des-Jeunes arena will complete our offer and meet the needs of neighbouring municipalities," said Vaudreuil-Dorion mayor Guy Pilon.
The Municipal Powers Act does not allow a city to acquire a building in another municipality, with certain exceptions,
Vaudreuil-Dorion's acquisition of the arena will enable Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, Pincourt and Terrasse-Vaudreuil to operate the arena and continue to offer ice time to its citizens and organizations.
"The three towns on Île Perrot are ready to operate the arena for the next five years. Vaudreuil-Dorion will now begin negotiations with the owner," said Pilon.
The Cité-des-Jeunes arena is located on the campus of the same name, near the indoor pool and the synthetic soccer field.
Under Vaudreuil-Dorion's intermunicipal agreement, organizations recognized by the city will benefit from the same rental rates as those of the municipalities on Île Perrot.
