Begins June 19
Vaudreuil-Dorion introducing smart bin waste collection

Par John Jantak, Journaliste
Vaudreuil-Dorion has mandated USD Global to install an electronic chip on its large bins reserved for garbage and organic matter as the city prepares for smart bin waste collection services.
This process, called bin assignment, will begin on June 19 and continue for several months.
Residents should put their black garbage bin and 240-litre brown organic waste bin - for those who have received one - near the curb of their property so they can be seen from the street and make them easily accessible by the contractor.
A sticker will be placed on the bins after the chip has been installed to let citizens know the bin can be returned to its usual location.
Citizens should also write their address in the space provided on the side of the bin to avoid errors and make the process easier for the bin assignment team.
Residents will receive a 240-litre brown bin in September that will replace the small brown bin. Only the large bin will be picked up during organic waste collection. The small bin can be used for other purposes. Details will also be provided to anyone who want to get rid of it.
The MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, which is responsible for managing organic waste in the region, is now accepting green waste in the brown bin.
The contractor who is awarded the collection contract will begin smart bin waste collection in January 2024. Incentive pricing is expected to begin in 2026 when the trial period to assess the new system ends.
Smart collection incentives
Incentive pricing aims to encourage people to do a better job sorting and producing less waste. It will reward people who adopt good waste management practices involving the collection of household and organic waste.
Each bin will have a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder (electronic chip) for each address. Collection trucks will be equipped with a reading system to record which containers are picked up during each collection cycle and transmit the data to the city.
This information will allow the city to manage its bin inventory more effectively and monitor waste pickup.
Collections will be monitored in real-time which will provide more accurate and rapid management of unforeseen on-the-job events. It will also improve service when it comes to problem solving and responding to citizen complaints.
Smart collection will also change how the costs related to waste management are passed on to citizens through their tax bills.
The new tariff planned for 2026 will be calculated according to how often citizens use the collection service - the number of times a bin is picked up throughout the year to encourage proper sorting and waste reduction.
