$500 fine for first offence
Rigaud imposes watering ban to conserve water for essential needs

Par John Jantak, Journaliste
A watering ban was issued in Rigaud effective immediately until further notice to ensure its drinking water supply is used for fire protection and other essential needs.
The ban was imposed due to the overuse of water from its aqueduct network, the lack of rain and rapid drop in its drinking water reserves. Anyone violating the ban will receive a fine of up to $500 for a first offence.
It is forbidden to water a lawn using a mechanical or automatic sprinkler system or use a hose with or without a self-closing nozzle. All automated sprinkler systems must be deactivated.
New vegetation, including lawns, seeds and landscaping cannot be watered unless a permit was issued before the ban came into force. The holder of a valid permit must comply with all the conditions in the permit and make it visible from the roadway.
It is also prohibited to wash vehicles, driveways, building walls and windows and completely fill a swimming pool, although water levelling is permitted. Owners may use a private water truck service at their own expense.
It is also prohibited to hold a fundraising car wash even if a permit was issued before the ban took effect.
Residents can still manually water vegetable and flower gardens using a hand-held watering can or a hose with a hand-held, self-closing nozzle between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, but water must not run onto the ground, driveway or lawn.
Residents can also use any sprinkler system that draws water from a private well or water basin such as a lake or stream that is not affected by the ban.
Water toys and games used to cool a child can be used but they cannot be operated unless a child is present.
