Pincourt residents took to social media to comment on the decision made by the town to change the name of Firefighters' Day to Pincourt Day. Most voiced their displeasure with the change while a few didn't feel it was a big deal.

The change was announced in a press release posted on the town's website yesterday May 23. The following is a sample of people's comments.

"I wonder what the motive is. It’s the one day a year we acknowledge our unsung heroes. It seems like we acknowledge Pincourt the other 364. I, for one, feel strongly the firemen and other lifesavers deserve our recognition"

"Not a fan. How did this happen and why weren't the citizens of Pincourt asked about it? We are the ones paying for it!"

"Every town has a day for their city. Fireman’s day is unique. It’s sad to change it. Hopefully it gets changed back. Not a fan sorry"

"Not a fan of the change. One of the things I've always liked was the non-political, non-partisan aspect of it. It's a celebration that goes beyond "town". Geez, Pincourt is already the host. I see no need to "brand" the thing with the town's name"

"There are a lot of fire engines and firemen from other towns!!! Not from Pincourt! NOT A FAN OF PINCOURT DAY!"

"What was wrong with Fireman s Day ? No need for the change . It will always be Fireman s Day for me and most of our citizens"

"Please don’t"

"Stupid… this is stupid.. it’s always been FIREMANS day and should remain that way! I hope they all decide to not part take in the fireman’s parade and maybe then pincourt will be realize the stupidity of this action"

"It will always be Fireman’s Day. That is what our town is known for"

"We aren’t celebrating Pincourt. We are celebrating the hard work our volunteers put into our community to keep us safe and protected. By celebrating “Pincourt Day” you’re essentially celebrating the mayor….LOL! Which is a no from me.

"The term "fireman's day" celebrated hundreds of our local and peri-local heroes annually. It was a celebration for many municipalities and their unsung heroes as well. I don't have any problem with changing the name.. but it was never just about Pincourt... we were fortunate to be hosting such an amazing event... but it will always be Fireman's Day in my heart.

"Lol a lot of people in the comments are really overreacting. It's just a name change, and Pincourt Day makes more sense. We will still be celebrating the firefighters and other volunteers. Calm down lol"

"What about firefighters from other towns. Will they still be coming.. i'm a big NO on the name change.. BOOOOO"

Pincourt District 1 Councillor Hugo Gendron also responded to residents' concerns with the following social media post -

Like you, I have just learned that the name of the "Fête des pompiers" has been changed to the "Fête de Pincourt". Firemens' Day is a tradition in our town. It celebrates our permanent firefighters, our volunteer firefighters and our first responders. It also brings together firefighters from various departments in the region. Year after year, this celebration is a success. Rest assured that I will go to the source to understand this change of name so that on August 12, we can all celebrate the contribution of our city's firefighters and first responders.
