A dog and cat were rescued from a fire in basement apartment in a multi-unit dwelling in Saint Lazare this afternoon.

Josh Charlton, a tenant in the building, broke a basement window to rescue Lucas and the cat before the first firefighters from Saint Lazare arrived on scene and quickly brought the blaze under control.

The fire fighters assisted by Lucas and gave him oxygen, according to information obtained by Néomédia journalist Marie-Claude Pilon.

The occupant of the premises and owner of Lucas was not at home when the fire started. He suffered a nervous shock when he returned and was transported to the regional hospital in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

The fire was confined to the basement apartment at 2138 Chemin Sainte-Angélique which was severely damaged.

Saint Lazare firefighters noted there was a lot of smoke and flames in the unit and that the occupant of the dwelling was not present when they first arrived.

There was considerable damage in the affected dwelling but little or no damage to the other units.

Firefighters from Hudson, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Sainte-Marthe also responded to the emergency as part of the regional intermunicipal first-aid agreement.
