Residents and non-profit organizations from across the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region will be able to have their sensitive personal documents shredded for free at the upcoming sixth edition of Shredding Day.

The event, which is being hosted in partnership with the Caisse Desjardins de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and Iron Mountain shredding services will take place on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It will be held at three Caisse Desjardins de Vaudreuil-Soulanges service centers in the municipalities of île-Perrot, Saint Zotique and Vaudreuil-Dorion.

An Iron Mountain shredder truck will be on site at each location to shred bank statements, identity and personal documents, bills, credit card statements and other sensitive documents. All participants will be entered into a draw for a personal shredder and a barrel to collect rainwater.

The importance of shredding documents to prevent identity theft cannot be overemphasized according to all the participants organizing the event.

"If people throw out their personal documents into their recycling or garbage bins without destroying them, they can be easily retrieved and the information can be used to create fake identities and commit fraud, said Catherine Sénéchal," SQ Community Relations Officer for the Municpalité Régionale de Comté (MRC) de Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

"One of our missions is to educate the population about identity theft and fraud. We are proud to be associated with Iron Mountain and the SQ and our ongoing efforts to educate the public about destroying documents with personal information," said Sébastien Laliberté, Director General of the Caisse Desjardins de Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

"It's important for people to be aware of identity theft. We need to do our part with the Caisse-Desjardins and the SQ to help push the message about identity theft and the importance to shred personal information," said Steven Daras, Transport Supervisor for Iron Mountain.

Daras added Iron Mountain is proud of the association they've had with the Caisse-Desjardins de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and SQ for the past six years. "We've had a great relation. Each prior event has been a great success. We've shredded about eight to 10 tons of documents each year. This clearly shows our message is getting across and people are more aware about the importance of shredding their personal information," he said.
