Property taxes: 4.19% increase in Saint-Lazare
The Saint-Lazare municipal council adopted a $40.9M budget at its December 20 meeting. Despite the inflationary period, elected officials managed to keep the tax increase to 4.19% for a single-family home of average value.
This means that the basic tax rate for the average home will increase from $0.5789 to $0.6034, or less than 0.3¢ per $100 of assessment. Even so, this increase in property taxes represents less than $11 per month for the average single family home valued at $467,600.
As elsewhere, the City must deal with a significant increase in the co-payments for various services such as the MRC (6.82%), the ARTM (6.81%) and the Sûreté du Québec (6.52%). Without these significant increases in the various assessments, the tax bill would have increased by 2.2%.
‘’The Town of Saint-Lazare has adopted a thorough and responsible 2023 budget. The population is already facing a staggering inflation rate, so we chose to reduce the tax burden of taxpayers while putting forward structuring projects, says Saint-Lazare Mayor Geneviève Lachance. We have worked hard to limit the increase in municipal taxes and give citizens some breathing room, while making our Town the best place to live.’’
In addition, as part of our ongoing commitment to sound management of public funds, Policy 28 - Community Support is abolished and replaced by Policy 37 - Framework for the Recognition and Support of Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs).
This redesigned policy now places greater focus on the community. It provides a new neutral and objective mechanism for accrediting NPOs and Town partners to receive financial or material support, thereby putting an end to recreational activities subsidies for individuals.
