Participative budgeting initiative
Vaudreuil-Dorion will have its object library
In the last three weeks, the citizens of Vaudreuil-Dorion were asked to vote for the project they would like the City to carry out in 2023. 40.4% of participants voted in favour of the object library project at the municipal library.
The project of object library, imagined by citizens Karine La Flèche and Stéphanie Dornenberg, will be realized inside the walls of the library. Citizens will be able to borrow a wide range of tools and equipment that are rarely used, difficult to store or expensive to purchase.
Citizens will be able to find, for example, a sewing machine, an electric drill, an axe, a slow cooker, camping equipment, bird watching equipment, etc. The goal is to provide access to as many resources as possible by reducing overconsumption and decreasing single-use purchases.
"Offering such a service to our subscribers was already an idea that we wanted to integrate into the future library and we are delighted to be able to make it a reality in the framework of the participatory budget! This is a wonderful initiative that aims not only to fight against waste by promoting the sharing of resources among citizens, but also to further anchor the library in the community," said Annick Lemay, Division Manager - Library.
This participative budgeting initiative stems from the aspiration of the 2020-2025 strategic plan entitled Inhabit my city! to encourage everyone to participate in the well-being of the community.
The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion received nine citizen project proposals. Among these, three were selected to be submitted to the public vote which took place from November 22 to December 5.
The projects of training modules at Paul-Gérin-Lajoie park and a disc golf course at Harwood nature park followed closely with 31.7% and 28.9% of the votes respectively. In total, 1542 Vaudreuil-Dorion residents submitted their vote on the online survey platform.
